This year’s Oregon Leadership Institute (OLI) was the largest yet with over 500 members and advisers from Oregon Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs)! The Oregon Leadership Institute (OLI) provided the opportunity for Oregon FBLA members to learn about other CTSOs, network with other FBLA members, and attend workshops addressing a variety of topics to help them be successful. Brittani Parker of TRI Leadership Resources led an opening session titled “REEL Leadership,” during which students learned about key leadership concepts from popular movies. Members then dispersed and attended workshops led by business and industry leaders, advisers, state staff, and TeamTRI. Some of the most popular parts of the workshops were the activities; they included Slack Jaw Dance Off and Rock Paper Scissors. The workshops were very engaging and provided useful information. The first day of OLI ended with the Oregon FBLA opening session where the State Officers informed the attending members of FBLA programs and initiatives for the year.
The second day began with a workshop led by the FBLA State Officers that addressed involvement strategies in a chapter. Members learned about ways to get involved on the local chapter, state, and national levels of FBLA. Students then attended workshops for the rest of the day, including one by keynote speaker Kent Julian where student learned how to set achievable yet simple goals! Kent Julian then closed the Oregon Leadership Institute with a powerful message that inspired everyone and taught valuable lessons about leadership. All in all, OLI 2013 was a great success!
